복잡한 세상을 살면서 책이나 영화를 보면서까지 머리를 복잡하게 하기 싫은 나다. 그래서 착한?! 내용의 청소년 문고를 좋아하지요. 그런 나는 이번에도 뉴베리 메달 수상작을 골라보았다.

 

이 이야기는 일본 이민자 가정의 둘째 딸 Katie 가 병으로 죽어간 Lynn 언니를 그리며 써내려간 형식의 소설이다. 
1950-60대 미국 배경으로 이민자 가정의 곤핍함 그러나 가족의 사랑으로 이겨가는 모습이 아름답다. 

그러나 현실을 마냥 아름답게만 묘사하지 않고 주변에서 일어나는 노동자들이 겪는 불합리함, 이민자로서 겪는 차별 등을 담담하게 잘 묘사한다.  

 

제목 kira kira는 일본어로 "반짝반짝" 정도로 해석할 수 있겠다. 원서에서는 glittering, shining으로 번역해주고 있다. 어린시절 Lynn이 Katie에게 알려준 표현이다.
